andrew near empireFor Andy Near, President of Empire Contractors, becoming part of the Choice Roof Contractor Group in 2015 has had a direct and significant impact on his business.

“It has definitely played a key role in our growth, and is probably the single reason we are now doing large commercial roofs consistently” he said.

During 2017 alone, Empire completed dozens of large commercial jobs, and more than half of those jobs were the result of marketing help he obtained through the Choice Roof Contractor Group. Empire achieved year-to-date sales of $1.75 million during the last week of 2017.

Beyond the impact the group has had on his own company, though, Andy sees huge value in what the group offers to the roofing industry in general.

He will host a national workshop for the group at his business this month, and he has set a personal goal to help the group’s membership grow to 300 members.

“I believe in the program so much,” Andy said, adding, “I do it all from my heart and also from the idea that I know we’re onto something big, and I know I’m betting on a winning horse with Choice Roof Group.”

The old adage says, “There is safety in numbers.” For the endorsed members of the group, however, there is much, much more than that.

For John Miller of A-1 Roofing Systems, belonging to our respected roofing association has provided credibility, support and resources that have made all the difference in his business, helping him evolve from being a struggling roofer just surviving from job to job to doing large commercial projects. Even with the fantastic year he had in 2017, John expects to double his revenue next year.

A Foot in the Door

Prior to belonging to the group, he was struggling to gain traction in commercial roofing and to make ends meet, getting only small jobs for small buildings in a small town. He ended up taking some residential roofing work just to help generate cash flow.

“You were always busy, but it seemed like the profit margins weren’t nearly big enough,” he said. “There was a lot of hustle. There was a lot of fast-paced activity and not enough leftover time.”

John said he was initially intimated by the commercial roofing market because of the largeness of the projects. He had to work on personal development, finding confidence, learning how those in the business world think and operate, and how to “speak the same language” to show business owners that they could trust him.

“I had to learn the skills and the mindset to learn how to perform in that market,” he said.

When meeting with a prospective client, John said, it’s a mistake to “sell yourself” and tell them everything you can do for them. Instead, he leads out by questioning a client and truly listening—finding out what they need, what their past experience has been with roofers, and how he can help them. He asks to take a tour of the facility so he can see where the issues are, and then after looking at the roof he generally proposes two or three options that he feels will best fit what the building owner needs.

Above all, benefiting the customer and truly providing service should always be a roofer’s aim.

“It’s so fun once you’ve learned your communication skills with your customers,” John said. “You can sell a couple hundred-thousand dollars in sales very quickly just because they sense that you’re servicing them. They don’t feel like you’re just taking money.”

Passing the Torch

sonJohn has certainly seen success since joining the Choice Roof Contractor Group. He foresees bringing in millions of dollars in revenue in the coming years. He counts himself blessed that instead of being out in the cold working just to make it through, he is now able to strategically use the winter months to prepare for next season and to line up spring jobs.

John’s five-year plan is to pass on his business to his oldest son, who is now 16 and whose ambition is to go into roofing like his dad.

“He loves what we do, and he has a passion for that,” John said.

Once the torch has been passed from father to son, John wants to become a consultant and a coach for roofing businesses—something Conklin, our preferred manufacturer, will pay him to do.

One such success story is that of Carl Humes in Ft. Worth, Texas. We’ve been privileged to see many exciting things happening. Many roofing contractors have joined our nationwide network and achieved new business heights. In other cases, contractors who are active in commercial roofing have taken advantage of increased lucrative business opportunities.

It’s worth highlighting the success story of one quality-minded Choice Roof Contractor team: Robert and Lori Brenneman of Jasper, Missouri. These dedicated roofers have seen some amazing growth opportunities in the past few years. Before they started out with Conklin Roofing Systems around three years ago, they had firm roots in residential contracting. And since then, their story has been life-changing.

The Backdrop

Today, Robert and Lori are the owners and operators of Brenneman Roofing (www.brennemanroofing.com), a fast-growing commercial roofing company in Missouri. And they’re continuing to reach new plateaus.

Rob and Lori’s journey in roofing begins around ten years ago. At that time, aside from being a full-time firefighter, Rob operated a local handyman business. And since he had many jobs each day, it was time-consuming – which meant he was often away from Lori and their four children.

Intrigued, Rob did some research and decided to go to a roof systems training. That fall, he learned the proper applications of Conklin roofing products in Kansas City. With the Conklin Master Contractors who shared their testimonials and success achieved, Rob felt inspired and well-educated when he left the roofing training center.

Nonetheless, time proved to be tight over the first year. But Rob remained dedicated. In due time, the Brennemans would become more involved – albeit from a different direction.

Things Gear Up

In that time frame, Lori started a housekeeping business. She built up a steady client base, but wasn’t satisfied with the income it was bringing in. Rob convinced her to try out some of Conklin’s cleaning products – and they were effective. They were not only solid cleaning agents, but they increased her profit margins. Convinced of Conklin products’ efficacy, the Brennemans attended a Conklin business seminar, where they learned first-hand of the larger potential offered by Conklin.

Afterward, the roofing business really started to take off. They began getting local roofing jobs. Things have been moving at neck-breaking speed here at Choice Roof Contractor Group this year. Nationwide interest in our free lead generation, life time mentorship and support, and other benefits continues to reach higher levels. In addition, our dedicated team has been steadfastly looking for new ways to create new business opportunities for our members, as well as ways to strengthen existing ones.

It is worth a moment to highlight the story of one of our newest members: KCI Roofing out of Covington, Georgia. Since they attended Conklin’s commercial roofing training program in August, company owner Shane Kitchens, Jason Perhacs, and other members of the company have hit the ground running. And they have been seeing some tremendous results with our network’s support and, more importantly, due to their drive to expand quickly.

In short, their foray into commercial roofing has been nothing short of explosive.

The Back Story

Before getting into the details: a little background on KCI Roofing. Based out of central Georgia, KCI Roofing has been in the roofing industry for 50 years. They have steadily grown into a large residential roofing company, and have done as much as $12 million in annual sales, with 25 salespeople and offices in multiple states. Having built up a strong presence in residential roofing, they have now turned to commercial roofing opportunities throughout Georgia.

Opportunity Knocks

Just a few weeks ago, KCI Roofing received a 54,000 square foot roofing lead from us. And having reached out to old connections, they have begun opening up doors to look at many other commercial roofing projects, as well.

To help them with bidding on these roofs, Senior Mentor Sam Hostetler flew down to Georgia. As part of our life time mentorship and support program, Sam was on-site to help Shane and Jason look over different roofing projects, make sales and product demonstrations to client prospects, become more knowledgeable of Conklin product’s versatility and applicability, and more. The prospective clients were also impressed by the fact that Shane and Jason had strong ties to experienced, capable roofers who know the full merits of Conklin’s product line.

Over a period of about a week, Shane and Jason grew even more confident in their understanding of the dynamics of the commercial roofing market, as well as how Conklin’s roof coatings and other products offer value. Overall, the takeaways from Sam’s week-long assistance, and their own efforts to plunge forward, were tremendous.

Current Highlights

As a result of Sam’s week-long trip and KCI Roof’s energetic entrance into commercial roofing, the following highlights have come to the fray:

  • KCI Roofing is currently in the bidding and prospect stage of a 400,000+ square foot flat roof on a school in Georgia. This roof has three sections where restoration work is needed badly. In these areas, officials have agreed to have a Conklin product test run be done. Based on his extensive sales background, Sam rates KCI’s chances of closing the entire project as “excellent.” (Update 12-19-14: We helped install a foam and coatings system on the first part this week.)
  • KCI Roofing currently has prospects for an additional 2-3 million square feet of roofing in the surrounding communities.
  • On top of the product testing in the three sections, KCI Roofing and Choice Roof Contractor Group will be hosting the school superintendent on a business trip in Missouri. There, they will walk some roofs that had Conklin products applied on it years ago—and that have not had trouble to this day.
  • KCI Roofing has been actively putting out bids on other flat roofs and metal roofs in their surrounding communities—and has been getting tremendous feedback on the energy-efficiency and cost savings offered by Conklin’s roof restoration systems.
  • Sam shares his excitement for KCI Roofing and the future, as it is clear there are tremendous commercial roofing market opportunities in Georgia, based on his recent nationwide tour and his week-long trip there.
  • KCI Roofing is busily engaging in telephone outreach efforts throughout Georgia and has been highly successful in arranging on-site roof evaluations.

When asked for his thoughts on what has happened, Shane shared that he is impressed with the extent to which our network has helped them in their efforts. Today, we take a look at how Conklin and other timely resources are helping a young, capable Wisconsin craftsman carve out his emerging success story.

Small Town Setting, Big-Time Potential

Simon TroyerBased out of the small village of Coloma, Wisconsin, Simon Troyer says he’s always enjoyed doing construction. And now that he has a commercial roofing division up-and-running as part of his business, he is tremendously excited for the future.

When asked to describe his professional background up to this point, Simon says it’s been a gradual process. With the business opportunities from Conkin and dedicated support from Choice Roof Contractor Group, though, Simon truly feels confident in his business outlook.

Like many great stories, Simon’s story is rooted in humble beginnings. It starts with his entrance into the construction industry around eight years ago or so.

Setting the Foundation

In 2007, he embarked on a career in construction, slowly before he was married. In those days, Simon worked with family on various small construction projects and occasionally completed work that came his way. He had grown up in a sawmill and on a family dairy farm, and from there he had been looking for a change of pace.

Over the years Simon honed his technique as well as his passion for construction and helping others, qualities which define his business to this day. Bit-by-bit, he learned the ins-and-outs of many aspects of carpentry, remodeling, roofing, and others. It set a firm foundation for when he would start out in business for himself.

Entrepreneurship Beckons

After five years of working with others, Simon decided he wanted to strike out on his own. He desired to provide a stable life for his family, and the independence and profit potential that come up with business ownership were hard to dismiss. With his construction skill set, Simon was confident he would be able to run his own business. In late 2012, desire became reality. Simon launched Troyer Carpentry, buoyed by the craftsmanship skills he had developed over the years as a quality-minded construction professional.

When Simon recalls those days, he says that times were good, but he remained on the lookout for additional business opportunities that would strengthen his family’s quality of life. It wasn’t clear yet, but Simon had actually come across the Conklin business opportunity that would open up new doors for him later. In the months before he formally started his own business, a friend introduced him to Conklin and spoke of the opportunities. Simon’s interest was piqued, but he wasn’t quite ready to take the leap.

Timely Re-Encounter

A few years later, Simon had built his business to be a respectable company that performed occasional residential repair work along with bigger-scale home construction projects. His desire to better his family’s well-being remained as strong as ever. He had examined other business opportunities, but close scrutiny had revealed them to be not so promising. A chance re-encounter with the Conklin business opportunity proved to be a turning point.

About two years or so after he had first heard of Conklin, Simon was again reacquainted with it by who is now fellow Choice Roof Contractor John Miller of A-1 Roofing Systems. This time around, Simon was more impressed by what Conklin offers. Simon appreciated how he’d have more time to spend with his family, along with how he’d be helping other people with Conklin’s great products.

Taking the Leap

After seeing what he could accomplish with this unique opportunity, Simon decided to take the plunge. He signed up in Conklin, and he went to its comprehensive roof systems training in June 2013. At the training program, Simon says he was tremendously impressed by the depth of the instruction itself. It truly gave him the confidence that he could add a new division to his construction company—a commercial roofing business unit—and he could give his family the life he wanted them to have.

New Developments and Emerging Opportunities

In time, Simon heard of another appealing group that built on top of Conklin’s roofing business opportunity. Hailing from the great state of Michigan, Jonathan has stepped forward and decided to jumpstart his own commercial roofing company. Humble Beginnings: Installing Windows

Jonathan’s story begins in his teenage years, when he became an active part of his family’s construction operations. He had grown up in construction for his whole life up to that point, but that’s when things started taking off.

His family’s company specializes in vinyl windows, but Jonathan recalls his involvement in all manner of construction work. As a member of the crew, he was charged with discarding old building products and other duties related to project disposal. Over an approximately two-to-three-year spread, he rose in the ranks from menial laborer to full-time contractor, and he assumed more responsibilities in the construction crew’s day-to-day operations.
